Our practitioners are trained in EMDR (Eye-movement desensitisation and reprocessing), Theraplay ®, and TF-CBT (Trauma informed cognitive behavioural therapy) to meet a range of therapeutic needs of our clients. Each framework is an evidence-based framework and is endorsed by leading practitioners in the field of developmental and complex trauma.

We see children and adults for therapeutic work, in addition to families and couples working on improving their relationships. Our modalities help our clients to increase control over their emotions and work toward resolving traumatic memories and feelings that are impacting on their day to day lives. Working with children and caregivers together can assist in developing security within the relationship and increasing emotional regulation.

At Continuum, we are registered for Medicare services under a mental health care plan, so you can see your general practitioner and get a referral today.

Therapy

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a non-drug, reward-based training system for your brain. It’s a non-invasive treatment that works toward improving the source of your unwanted symptoms.

Neurofeedback is used to help many conditions such as: ADHD and ADD, stress disorders, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, headaches, migraines, some forms of memory concerns, and sleep issues.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) is a non-talking psychotherapy treatment that is proven to help people reduce and resolve issues and symptoms relating to traumatic memories. It can be used for symptoms associated with many issues, such as trauma, PTSD, addiction, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, grief, chronic pain, phobias, and more.

EMDR has a direct effect on the way the brain processes information, releasing emotional experiences that are trapped in the nervous system. Our trained therapists will then work with you to recall a disturbing thought, feeling, or memory, and begins the bilateral stimulation (something you can see, hear or touch, that occurs in a moving side to side pattern, such as moving your eyes back and forth). The disturbing memories are then reprocessed by the brain, resulting in painful feelings being exchanged for more resolved, peaceful feelings.

EMDR has 8 different phases and works with the past, present, and future. This therapy is grounded on the belief that the mind can heal from psychological trauma, much like the body can heal from physical trauma, and EMDR can unlock this healing process.

Our therapists use additional techniques such as parts/ego state work, flash techniques and, AF-EMDR.

Theraplay

®

Theraplay is a child and family therapy that is focused on supporting healthy attachment between a child and their caregiver. This therapy is based on the belief that strong attachment between a child and parent is the basis of a child’s ongoing well-being and mental health.

Our practitioners will guide the parent and child through fun, playful games, in addition to developmentally challenging and, nurturing activities. Each of the activities are designed to help the parent/caregiver in regulating the child’s behaviour. This therapy builds foundations for communicating love, joy, and safety from the parent to the child, and helps the child feel worthy, connected, cared for, safe and secure.

TF-CBT

Our therapists are trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT), which is an evidence-based treatment for children and young people who have experienced a trauma, and their parents or caregivers. TF-CBT can help with a range of complex emotional and behavioural difficulties that are associated with traumatic experiences.

TF-CBT is a short-term, structured therapy that can reduce the symptoms of trauma and PTSD, in addition to depressive and anxiety symptoms. The therapist also works with the parent or caregiver to assist with their own distress, and work with parenting skills and supportive interactions with the child.

Therapy Tools

Mental health professionals use a variety of instruments to assess mental health and wellbeing. Common purposes for psychological testing include: screening for the presence or absence of common mental health conditions; making a formal diagnosis of a mental health condition; assessment of changes in symptom severity; and monitoring client outcomes across the course of therapy.

Your therapist may ask you to compete a psychological test. The more common ones that we use can be found here.
